Why Wisdom Coaching?

Have you ever felt like you were using the wrong tool for the job or perhaps felt like you were using the right tool but in an ineffective way? Let me give you an example have you ever used a hand saw and it just took you so long to get through a piece of wood or project that had many pieces of wood where a circular hand saw, or table saw would have been much quicker. Or having to remove a really long screw from something by hand with a screwdriver instead of using a drill. That in a nutshell is why I decided to start the journey of becoming a wisdom coach for children.

I am a big believer in continued education I read books, I listen to podcasts and I'm always trying to grow in multiple areas of leadership. One of those areas is equipping children with the right kind of mindset skills for them to make good decisions in friendships, responsibility, respect, faith, integrity, and in other areas. Helping kids navigate conflict with friends and challenging their perspective in different experiences and areas.

I read books on discipline, I skim parenting books including, How to Have a New Kid by Friday, How To Be The Best Mom You Can Be, and How to Raise a Modern Day Knight. Discipline in the church books because of my context for the last 12 years of working with children and families inside of the church. But I want to be able to partner with people in the church and outside of the church as well.

I begin to look at different classes to take. Going back to school possibly and pursuing my master's degree and what degree that would be in. I also had to take into account the cognitive load that I would be putting on myself. And the time away from my wife. When was I going to be doing schoolwork? Listening to lectures, discussion boards, writing papers, and reading books. Was this type of time commitment the best choice for our family at this moment?  I have a Bachelor’s in Children and Family Ministry.  I have been an ordained minister since 2016.  I became a children's pastor in 2011 and have been working with families for a little over 12 years in the context of a faith community. How could I partner with our local schools? How could I partner with the families in our greater community context? I also wanted to challenge myself and do something different than going back to Bible college.

Different information came up about different kinds of mentoring and mentorship programs and coaching. I read a lot of things about life coaching and was looking for something that was specifically aimed to children and their families. Children these days are exposed to so many different influences. And honestly, I believe ever since COVID that children's mental wellness has become a big concern. Not just their mental health but their overall mental wellness. I looked at things about faith-based coaching and lots of things focusing on life coaching. As I was doing some research and looking at different options, I finally found a company called Adventures in Wisdom. ™ Becoming a wisdom coach, I like the sound of that over being a life coach.  What I really enjoy about Adventures in Wisdom™ is they coach through storytelling. And I have seen multiple times the power of a good story. Jesus the greatest teacher/coach of all time used stories called parables to teach lessons. I have seen how stories connect with kids on both an emotional level and an intellectual level, this is one of the things that drew me to Adventures in Wisdom™. I began to watch introductory videos and I really enjoy the heart of the founder Renaye. Wisdom coaching focuses on the child’s mental wellness.

Morgan and I decided that wisdom coaching would be the journey I would pursue. So I filled out my application and I scheduled my interview. With wisdom coaching, you have to pass in an initial interview to join the wisdom coaching community and get access to the training curriculum.  Adventures in Wisdom. ™ has coaches in over 30 countries and has been around since 2010 which is awesome. I passed my interview, and started to study. It was so fun to be back in this study mode knowing that there was a test coming up . I took handwritten notes, I made flash cards, I I read and I watched videos and I took more notes. Then I took my certification test and waited and waited and waited. And then I passed and that was such an awesome feeling and after passing I got all this other material to read and videos to watch to get started and one of those things is letting people know and that's why I am writing this blog to share a little bit of my journey and the decision behind pursuing wisdom coaching for children.

Coaching does not take place of therapy or counseling instead a wisdom coach partners with the counselor, with the therapist.  As a wisdom coach I partner with the parent to best equip their child with the right kind of growth mindset skills. Through Adventures in Wisdom™ I have become certified to coach children through 27 skill sets such as:  managing mistakes, overcoming fear, self-confidence, integrity, self-responsibility, respect, positive self-talk and much more.

I believe that all children should see their greatness and have the opportunity to develop an empowering mindset. I provide powerful tools and educational services, for change. I can work with your child to instill new thought patterns and positive mindsets, based on proven successful models.

I like to think of it as personal and leadership development for kids.

As your child’s coach, I already believe in them more than they believe in themselves. While working with them, I will provide at- home work and resources for you as the parent. Also providing a wrap up of what we worked on in our session. I am in your corner.

You can click the Coaching for Kids tab for more information. I would love to start a conversation with you about your child’s journey to become a master adventurer of their life.
